The truth is: once it comes to casinos and elegance, reality is somewhat faraway from the fantasy of black-tie, full tux, evening wear, and James Bond wanting dangerous as he bets it all at the blackjack table.

Although there are a few of casinos that apply a decent dress code, and demand a degree of sartorial savoir faire before you set foot in their premises, most casinos are happy if you’re carrying a shirt and a pair of trousers.

Last week, at the 2015 Paris Fashion Show, Karl Lagerfeld raised the casino fashion bar thus high that only Hollywood A-listers would have any likelihood of skipping past the purple rope and touching the tables. Vegas Hotel

Lagerfeld is that the head designer and inventive director for fashion house behemoth Chanel. The German designer wished to recreate the glamour of the casino and commissioned a lavish casino at the Grand Palais in Paris.

The venue was reworked into a large casino for the Chanel catwalk show, complete with slot machines round the central gambling space and blackjack and roulette tables within the middle.

“I like people once they‘re gambling and well dressed like in Monte Carlo,” aforesaid Lagerfeld. “I like that elegant moment of lovely people going into a casino carrying jewellery. It’s like a fantasy.”

A-List Action

Of course, simply making a completely functioning casino within the Grand Palais wasn’t enough for Lagerfeld. What you actually need are celebrities – and Chanel has access to the A-list. Playing roulette and blackjack to the delight of the audience were Kristen Stewart, Julianne Moore, Rita Ora, Lily Collins and Lily-Rose Depp.

As the celebrities fiddled with their casino chips, models with bobbed hair and dark brows showcased Chanel’s high fashion collection for season. The show was closed by model superstar, and sister of Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner.

This is not the first time Karl Lagerfeld has pulled out all the stops with a lavish theatrical show. Last year, he recreated a Paris brassiere and, in 2012, the audience was welcome on board the full-size replica of a jumbo jet.

Casino Chanel

If you’re ever lucky enough to search out yourself in a casino sponsored by Chanel, you’ll expect the fashion stakes to be high. In reality, of course, things are totally different. In American and Australian casinos the design is simply XXXXXXL. The shirts are as loud as the over-excited punters. Generally, no jackets are necessary and jeans are fine. It is a long approach from the suave and class of Sean Connery in his prime.

In Europe, several casinos require a jacket and most of them can lend you one. The overall dress code requirement is ‘smart’.

The truth is: if you’re heading out for a evening playing roulette, craps, or perhaps the slots, it’s a plenty more fun if you make an effort and dress up for the occasion. These days, apart from weddings, there are few necessities to really rock a tuxedo or some night wear.

Why not embrace the old school class of the casino and get into character. You may be Humphrey Bogart at Rick’s Place, Daniel Craig at the Casino Royale, George Clooney in Oceans Eleven.

One thing you’ll bet on is that you just can have a lot of fun if you make the hassle. Though if you don not win at the tables, an evening pretending to be a high roller – complete with black tie and all the trimmings – is one you won’t forget in a hurry.
